The process

The best places to create rammed earth structures are near bodies of water where the earth has a high amount clay deposits. To get started, find an area that looks suitable and use a bucket to dig up some dirt. Smooth out the area as best as possible and use rocks to provide a surface for the earth to attach to.

This firepit took 10 blocks measuring at 6”x6”. Extra dirt with a higher clay content can be used to pack into any gaps and fix any issues. To provide a coating, mix up a slurry of the high clay content dirt and pour it over the top. To finish, place some sand at the bottom. Even though it is not yet dry, the structure is ready to use and have a fire.
